Anxiety in Children and Adolescents

Adults are not the only ones suffering from anxiety. Many children and teens are also facing this. Anxiety can lead to problems in school, poor peer or family relationships, and even drug and alcohol abuse.

Common signs of anxiety in children may include:

  • Refusing to go to school
  • Refusing to be separated from parent (particularly in younger children)
  • Complaining of headaches
  • Complaining of stomachaches or other body aches
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Difficulty concentrating/restlessness
  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Nightmares or Night terrors
  • Short-term memory problems, particularly recalling information
  • Drug or alcohol use (particularly in adolescents)
  • Repetitive behaviors
While children experience the same symptoms of anxiety as adults, they have difficulty explaining what they are feeling. This can make it difficult to accurate diagnose the problem. A thorough assessment, involving both the child and the parents is necessary to get a complete picture of what is going on.

Following the assessment, treatment involves a combination of individual and family sessions. This helps inform parents of progress during therapy and equips them to help their child outside of sessions. I've found that children and adolescents tend to respond quickly to treatment and often notice improvements after several sessions.
