What to Expect in Treatment

Anxiety is a natural and healthy reaction to a threatening situation. Your body reacts to avoid the danger and protect you. However, for some people, this anxiety reaction is disproportionate. Your body overreacts and treats an everyday situation as a threat. The way your body reacts is non-volitional, meaning that it is beyond your conscious control. You can't tell yourself to relax. Hypnosis can be an ideal treatment for anxiety because it also works through that part of you that is beyond your conscious control.

By utilizing the powerful connection between mind and body, hypnotherapy can offer new possibilities for the ways in which your body can respond. Hypnotherapy will help you reconnect with your experience in a different way. This happens through trance, which is a focused stated of awareness.

One of the greatest advantages of using hypnotherapy to treat anxiety is the rapid change that can occur. You should plan on between five and seven sessions total, although this may change depending on your specific situation. Each session lasts about 50 minutes. For the first session or two, we'll just be talking. I'll be getting as much information as possible from you to make sure I can be helpful. I also encourage you to ask as many questions as possible so that you feel comfortable with me and with the process.

After this, we will begin doing hypnotherapy. During these sessions, I will invite you into trance. Some clients experience tremendous improvement after our first hypnotherapy session. However, I ask you to plan on about three to four hypnotherapy sessions.  These are generally spaced out every two weeks so that you have time to notice changes between our sessions. Our final session together will be a wrap-up. We discuss the progress you have made and I teach you self-hypnosis so that you have a tool to continue your work as needed.

While hypnotherapy is helpful for many people, both children and adults, it isn't the right solution for everyone. I recommend a thorough assessment to see whether it is the right approach for you. I would be happy to meet with you to discuss your specific situation and make treatment recommendations.
